March 1, 2009--Northwestern scored a season-high 79 points, thanks to five double-digit scoring efforts, but it was not enough as Iowa held on for an 86-79 at Welsh-Ryan Arena. A season-high five Wildcats notched double-figures, led by Brittany Orban with 18, while Amy Jaeschke added 16 points and cousin Ellen Jaeschke notched 14. Kristin Cartwright and Jenny Eckhart added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The opening pace indicated there was more riding on the contest than just another win. For the Wildcats, it was Senior Day. For the Hawkeyes, boosting their post-season resume and carrying momentum into the Big Ten Tournament. Both teams responded in an offensive manner, combining to shoot 52 percent from the field and featuring a total of 10 players in double-digits. Each team shot at least 35 percent from three-point range and 84 percent from the free-throw line.
Noting Iowa
Iowa enters Sunday's contest on the heels of their first victory in the last five games, a 74-65 decision at Illinois Thursday night. The win was just the Hawks' second conference triumph, though they have come up on the short end of several close contests, including two overtime falters at Penn State (77-73) and at Minnesota (72-69).
The Hawkeyes are 6-4 overall when playing at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and 1-2 in league games. Five of Iowa's first eight Big Ten contests have been on the road.
Freshman Jamie Printy leads Iowa with 14.5 ppg, while Kachine Alexander is retrieving a team-high 11.2 rpg while contributing 14.4 ppg. Printy is also first in the league in free-throw percentage (92 percent).
As a team, Iowa is second in the conference in three-point shooting, nailing nearly 36 percent of its looks. Individually, Kamille Wahlin and Printy are first and second in the Big Ten in 3-point FG made, with 2.63 and 2.26 made per outing.
Jaeschke Notches 1,000th Career Point
Junior Amy Jaeschke recorded the 1,000th point of her career in the second half at Indiana Thursday evening. Jaeschke now has 1,005 career points and is 328 points away from cracking NU's all-time scoring list. This season has been one of milestones for the Wilmette, Ill., native, as she pulled down her 500th career rebound in the first half against Ohio State on Dec. 31, 2009, and swatted her 200th career block against Penn State on Jan. 3. Jaeschke needs just two blocks to become NU's all-time career blocks leader.
