'Cats Host Lady Lions In Sunday Matinee

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern (RV/RV) continues its hosting duties in this first full week of league action, welcoming Penn State to Welsh-Ryan Arena for a 2 p.m. match up Sunday. The Wildcats are coming off a loss to No. 6 Ohio State on New Year's Eve, just their third misstep of the season, and the first in the last seven games. The Lady Lions enter Sunday's affair with a 9-4, 1-2 record, most recently dropping a 69-60 decision at Illinois Thursday.

Next week, the Wildcats hit the road for away games at Minnesota and at Purdue. Northwestern battles the Gophers on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. CT and it takes on the Boilermakers at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, Jan. 10. The game against Purdue will be streamed live on www.bigtennetwork.com.

Northwestern fought hard, but No. 6 Ohio State proved to be too much, defeating the 'Cats, 86-60, Thursday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Freshman Dannielle Diamant paced NU with a career-best 20 points and Amy Jaeschke turned in her eighth-consecutive double-figure performance, recording 13 points. Freshmen Kendall Hackney added 10 points and five rebounds for the 11-3, 2-1 Wildcats.

Jaeschke Reaches 500 Career Rebounds; Nearing 1,000th Point-Plateau
Junio Amy Jaeschke pulled down her 500th career rebound in the first half against Ohio State on Dec. 31, 2009. She is also nearing the 1,000th point plateau, as she currently owns 937 career scores. While we're talking milestones, Jaeschke is just two rejections away from her 200th career blocked shot.
Hackney Garners Freshman of the Week Accolades
Freshman Kendall Hackney was named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week last week after helping the Wildcats to a pair of wins over Loyola (Chicago) and Michigan. With the two victories, NU improved to 11-2, the program's best start since the 1995-96 season.
The freshman averaged 13.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 62.5 percent from the floor as Northwestern posted a home win over the Chicagoland Ramblers and a victory on the road against Michigan. She tallied a career-best 20 points in an 85-58 rout against Loyola before contributing seven points and seven boards, including two timely triples, against Michigan on Monday.
The weekly honor is the first of Hackney's career and the first for any Wildcat (the award was established this year). It was also the second conference laurel for the Wildcats this season, as junior Amy Jaeschke was tabbed Big Ten Player of the Week on Nov. 23.
