EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat junior Andrew Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) of the wrestling team and senior Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) of the women's swimming team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Nadhir won two matches in impressive fashion during NU's trip to the NWCA National Duals on Saturday. Nadhir (149 pounds) posted a 14-4 major decision win over Central Michigan's Justin McDermitt before pinning Missouri's Brandon Wiest at the five-minute mark to earn six big points for the 'Cats. Nadhir is now 8-0 in dual matches and 14-3 on the year, already equaling his win total for all of last season.
Shishkoff almost single-handedly engineered NU's come-from-behind win at Notre Dame Saturday. Shishkoff won all three of her races, including winning three of the last four swimming events in the entire meet to give the Wildcats a six-point win over the Irish. After winning the 400 IM by more than two seconds, she anchored the winning 400 free relay to complete Northwestern's comeback.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is senior Kristin Cartwright (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) of the women's basketball team. Cartwright and the women's basketball team hosted a youth clinic prior to their game against Penn State on Jan. 3. Cartwright, her teammates and the NU coaching staff taught the children fundamentals of the game including dribbling, shooting and passing but also emphasized working as a team and trying hard in school.
