EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the second-straight year, Northwestern will welcome some of the top women's golf programs to the Chicagoland area for the 2009 Windy City Collegiate Classic. This year's Classic will take place at the Glen Club in Glenview, Ill., on Monday, Oct. 5 and Tuesday, Oct. 6.
"This is the only time all year that our girls get to stay home and compete in front of a hometown crowd," said head coach Emily Fletcher. "We're excited to be able to host this event for the second time and are looking forward to a couple great days of golf. All the feedback we received (after last year's Classic) was that people were very impressed with it, and I think it did a lot to help put Northwestern golf out there and show what this program has to offer."
The format for this year's Classic will be similar to last years, which was held at the Evanston Golf Club in Skokie. The Classic will be a 54-hole tournament, with 36 holes being played Monday and the final 18 scheduled for Tuesday. It will be a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. Monday, with tee times from holes one and 10 beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
Of the 12 teams that competed in last year's Windy City Classic, 10 will make a return trip to the Chicagoland area, including defending tournament champion Purdue. The 14th-ranked Boilermakers are one of eight schools boasting a Golfweek Sagarin top-50 ranking, joined by Arizona (No. 16), Illinois (No. 50), Iowa State (No. 49), New Mexico (No. 17), TCU (No. 28), Tulane (No. 30) and UNLV (No. 37). East Carolina, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, UNC Greensboro and UNC Wilmington round out the 15-team field.
Northwestern, ranked 41st in this week's Golfweek Sagarin ranking, looks to continue its fast start to the fall season, playing its fourth tournament in as many weeks. This season is already starting to shape up to be one of the best in Wildcat history, as NU is averaging a 297.44 scoring average with seven sub-300 rounds through the first three tournaments.
Individually, Wildcat golfers have posted seven top-20 finishes, led by freshman Lauren Weaver's (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) team-best fifth-place finish at the Dick McGuire Invitational a couple weeks ago. Junior Innapha Tantanavivat (Bangkok, Thailand/David Leadbetter Academy) was Northwestern's top finisher at last year's Classic, shooting 6-over par to finish tied for sixth overall.
The 2009 Windy City Collegiate Classic is open to the public with free admission. Live stats of the tournament will also be available at Golfstat.com.
