EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern, bolstered by the nation's top-ranked singles player in junior Maria Mosolova, opens its fall tournament campaign this weekend at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C. Last year, Mosolova won a singles title in flight two of the Furman Invite, picking up the first of 36 wins she compiled in her sophomore season.

Also figuring prominently for Northwestern in this weekend's action will be seniors Lauren Lui and Samantha Murray, who are ranked No. 89 and No. 40, respectively, in the Campbell's/ITA College Tennis preseason singles polls.

Among the teams in the field at this year's Furman Invitational are Clemson, Florida State, Furman, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Vanderbilt. Play will begin each day at 9 a.m. local time.

Sophomores Stacey Lee and Elena Chernyakova, who each made considerable contributions as freshmen to a Northwestern squad to finished 28-2 and reached the NCAA quarterfinals as a team for a second straight year. Lee finished the year with an impressive 20-2 singles mark--including an 8-0 record in the Big Ten--while Chernyakova held down the No. 3 doubles spot with Murray as the duo went 24-3 on the season.

Joining the fray for the Wildcats this year is a trio of talented freshmen in Linda Abu Mushrefova, Kate Turvy and Brittany Wowchuk, who held a No. 1 national juniors ranking in Canada.
