EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat freshman Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) of the women's golf team and senior Mike Kafka (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) of the football team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Weaver shot a 4-under 215 to finish in a tie for fifth place at the Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. Playing in just her second collegiate tournament, Weaver capped the weekend with a 5-under 68 in the final round, which is tied for the second-lowest round in program history. She also became only the fourth Wildcat in program history to finish a 54-hole tournament under par.
Kafka was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week following his record-breaking game at Syracuse on Saturday. Kafka broke a 47-year-old school record for consecutive completions with 16 and set a Northwestern standard for single-game completion percentage (83.3), finishing the game 35-of-42 for 390 yards and three touchdowns. Kafka also became the first Big Ten player in five years to throw for, run for and catch a touchdown in the same game.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is junior Kate Stephensen (Davis, Calif./Davis Senior High) of the women's swimming team. Stephensen and the women's swimming team volunteered in the physical education classes at Orrington Elementary School on Sept. 18. In addition to leading the children through a number of fun activities, Stephensen and the team emphasized the importance of physical health and wellness as well as the importance of sportsmanship and education.
