EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat sophomore Chelsea Armstrong (Perth, Australia/Penrhos) of the field hockey team and junior Matt Eliason (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) of the men's soccer team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Armstrong continued her torrid scoring pace to start her Northwestern career, totaling six goals and one assist in NU's victories over Central Michigan and Miami (Ohio) this weekend. Against CMU, she assisted on NU's first goal before scoring the next four in a 5-2 win. She leads the Big Ten in goals (12) and points (27) and only eight games into the year is already just the third Wildcat player since 2004 to score at least 12 goals in a season.
Eliason had a huge weekend, helping NU to two wins against opponents that appeared in last year's NCAA tournament. On Friday, Eliason tallied two first-half goals as NU defeated Oakland 2-1. Against No. 21 Tulsa, he gave NU a 1-0 lead by converting a penalty kick before lifting the 'Cats to victory by notching the game-winner 14 minutes into overtime. With seven goals through four games, he was named Top Drawer Soccer's National Player of the Week.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is sophomore Ben Johnson (Trevor, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran). Johnson and the entire football team hosted the Special Spectators group during its win over Eastern Michigan on Saturday. On Friday, Johnson and his teammates visited Children's Memorial Hospital and on Saturday the children and their families had a pregame tailgate, visited the WGN booth and were treated to a postgame autograph session in the locker room with the team.
