EVANSTON, Ill. -- After a strong showing at the DePaul Home Opener last Friday, Northwestern will be back on the cross country course this weekend when it travels to the Huskies Open in DeKalb, Ill., on Saturday. The women's 5K race is slated begin around 1 p.m. following the completion of a men's 8K race.
The Wildcats will face racers from UW-Milwaukee, UW-Green Bay, St. Mary's College, Chicago State, Western Illinois, Judson University, Iowa Western CC, and Northern Illinois.
"Last week's DePaul meet was a great opportunity to work out those first race jitters," said NU head coach April Likhite. "Although we held a few girls out, we allowed everyone competing to attack the race as a time trial. On Saturday we'll run with a bit more strategy and control in the beginning. Most importantly, we'll get a good look at where our fitness level is for a true 5K."
In NU's season debut, freshman Allegra Mayer (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) paced the squad in the 4K event with a time of 14:55.74. Sophomores Rachel Kaminski (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) and Hallie Busta (Jackson, Ohio/Massillon-Jackson) also got off to a good start this season, finishing 10th and 11th respectively overall.
ABOUT THE COURSE

Athletes will run east along the banks of the Kishwaukee River, and pass Barsema Hall, home of the NIU School of Business, before finishing just to the south of the softball field.
