EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat senior Meredith Frank (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) of the NCAA championship women's lacrosse team has been named the Hilton Garden Inn Athlete of the Week for her performance over the weekend. No Wildcat men's teams were in action last week.
Frank scored her third goal of the game in the sudden-victory period of Northwestern's thrilling NCAA semifinal contest against Pennsylvania Friday in Towson, Md., giving NU a 13-12 win and a spot in the NCAA final. Frank scored two more times in title game as Northwestern won its fifth consecutive national championship by dominating third-seeded North Carolina 21-7.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is senior Patrick Houlihan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Phillips Academy (Mass.)) of the men's basketball team. Houlihan and teammate Nick Fruendt visited Lakeview Elementary in Mount Prospect last Thursday as part of the school's “No Excuses” program, which aims to put every child in the mindset that he or she will one day attend college. Pat spoke about college life, balancing athletics and academics and the importance of sportsmanship in and out of competition.
