EVANSTON, Ill. -- As the Big Ten gears up for the start of postseason play, the conference announced Northwestern senior Georgia Rose as the season's final recipient of the Player of the Week award on Tuesday. Rose went a combined 4-0 in doubles and singles play over the weekend as Northwestern wrapped up its 11th straight conference championship.
This is the second weekly laurel of the year for Rose and the seventh time in her four-year career she has been recognized by the Big Ten. In all, the Wildcats won seven Big Ten Player of the Week awards in 2009.
Rose and doubles partner Lauren Lui battled Ohio State's Angela DiPastina and Christina Keesey to a tiebreaker win at No. 1 doubles on Saturday and followed it up with a win against Penn State on Sunday to extend their winning streak to four.
In singles, Rose outlasted Ohio State's Paloma Escobedo Saturday before moving up to the No. 1 position on Sunday, where she notched a late break against PSU's Lauren McCarthy to win 6-2, 6-4. Rose went 4-0 playing in the top singles spot in 2009.
She finishes this season with a 15-4 dual mark and a 29-2 career Big Ten dual record.
Rose and the Wildcats begin postseason competition Friday in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament hosted by Wisconsin. Northwestern, the tournament's top seed, is set to face the winner of an opening-round match between Minnesota and Penn State.
