EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern freshman Adrienne Monka (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) of the softball team and senior Tony Vercelli (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) of the baseball team have been named the Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Monka hit .765 (13-for-17) in five games last week, driving in 13 runs and slugging 1.706 with five home runs in five games. Monka hit safely in eight straight at-bats, a streak that is tied for ninth-longest in NCAA Division I history. In a sweep of No. 23 Iowa, Monka was 5-for-7 with two homers, a grand slam and 10 RBIs. She ended the week with another 5-for-7 effort and two home runs in two games at Purdue.
Vercelli drove in seven runs for the Wildcats last week as they posted a 3-1 record. After going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI in a win over Trinity International, Vercelli had a night to remember Wednesday. In NU's 5-1 win over Notre Dame at U.S. Cellular Field, the home of the Chicago White Sox, Vercelli socked home runs in the seventh and ninth to lead the Wildcats to the win. He also had the winning RBI in NU's 4-3 victory over Iowa on Friday.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is senior Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day). Rose ran a tennis clinic for children in the Youth Organization Umbrella (Y.O.U) middle school program in Combe Tennis Center last Wednesday. Rose and other members of the men's and women's tennis teams have been hosting children from Y.O.U. throughout spring quarter to increase their exposure to tennis and Northwestern University.
