EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat senior Nazlie Ghazal (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) of the women's tennis team and sophomore Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) of the men's golf team have been named the Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Ghazal picked up her first two dual doubles victories of her senior campaign this weekend, teaming with Elena Chernyakova at No. 3 doubles for 8-3 wins in NU's sweeps of Minnesota and Iowa. Ghazal also won in singles against the Gophers before sliding up to the third singles spot for the first time this year and taking a three-set victory at Iowa. She has won 11 consecutive singles matches and 37 of her 38 career Big Ten duals.
Dupont led Northwestern to its first team championship of the year at the Kepler Intercollegiate. Dupont shot a final round 1-under 70 to account for the only under-par round out of the 221 rounds fired by the 74 entrants during the course of the tournament. Dupont finished a career-best second, making birdie on his 54th hole to help NU to a two-stroke win in the event.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is senior Brendan Mitchell (Twinsburg, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) of the football team. Mitchell and other football players conducted a spring football clinic for the Northbrook Junior Spartans football organization last weekend. Mitchell and his teammates provided skill instruction and demonstrations for the young athletes and also spoke about the importance of attitude, hard work and doing well academically.
