EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern placed runners in a pair of events at the Chicagoland Championships Saturday at the University of Chicago. NU's day was highlighted by a second-place showing by freshman Sophie Ewald in the 1,500-meter and a third-place finish by junior Paulina Garcia in the 5K.
Ewald was one of two runners at the event to break the five-minute mark, crossing just three seconds behind the winner in 4:53.96. Ewald's fast-pace day also included the 800-meter race where she came in ninth in a time of 2:28.86.
Garcia, meanwhile, looked strong with a season-best 18:32.65 5K finish. Freshman Molly Waterhouse took sixth in the 5K in a time of 18:48.99 while classmate Abby Tracy crossed two seconds later to claim seventh and record a personal-best.
Also setting personal records were Northwestern's next two finishers in the 5K, beginning with freshman Rachel Edwards in 18:56.85 and junior Carla Wirtschafter in 19:56.11. Madeline Rozwat rounded out the competitors for the Wildcats and set a season-best with 20:19.05.
