EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat freshman Adrienne Monka (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) of the softball team and senior Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) of the wrestling team have been named the Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Monka batted .500, clubbing three home runs and two doubles during Northwestern's 3-1 weekend that included three wins over top-10 teams. Monka had a two-homer performance in a Sunday run-rule victory against No. 8 Tennessee and also homered versus No. 6 Oklahoma. She recorded a 1.417 slugging percentage on the weekend and now has a team-best eight home runs.
Herbert won the third Big Ten championship of his career at Penn State on Sunday, defeating third-ranked Phil Keddy of Iowa in the final. Herbert, the first NU wrestler to win three league titles, was voted by the conference's coaches as Big Ten Wrestler of the Year after the match. He is a perfect 29-0 this season, 144-4 in his Northwestern career and has won 60 consecutive collegiate matches.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is sophomore Corbin Bryant (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) of the football team. Corbin and numerous other NU student-athletes took part in the Dance Marathon Kids Fair on Saturday, entertaining the children by playing games, painting Northwestern logos on faces and making Willie the Wildcat puppets. Corbin participated in the dance marathon along with other football players as well as Pat Fitzgerald, who helped teach the kids the NU fight song.
