EVANSTON, Ill. -- Top-ranked Northwestern improved to 2-0 in conference action and 11-1 overall with a 7-0 dismissal of Michigan State Saturday in East Lansing. The Wildcats will stay in Big Ten competition next weekend with home duals against Illinois and Indiana.
NU's doubles lineup, which has dropped just one doubles point all season, posted wins at all three positions beginning at No. 1 where Georgia Rose and Lauren Lui downed Manon Noe and Whitney Wilson, 8-1. Rose and Lui are now 13-7 as a duo in 2008-09.
Things were a little closer at No. 2 and No. 3 where Maria Mosolova and Keri Robison notched an 8-4 victory and Elena Chernyakova and Samantha Murray bested Lindsey Longergan and Ana Milosavljevic, 8-6.
Moving into singles, Northwestern continued its domination, beginning with Lui's 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Elena Ivanova. It was Lui's 23rd singles win of 2008-09 and extended her in-conference winning streak to a perfect 22 for 22.
Second-ranked Mosolova was pushed to a 7-5 decision in her first set before coasting in the second, 6-1, while Murray found herself in the opposite situation, winning the second set by a 7-5 decision to avoid a match tiebreak set. The win was Murray's team-leading 24th singles victory of the year.
Northwestern faces the Illini at 5 p.m. on Friday before welcoming the Hoosiers to Combe Tennis Center at 2 p.m. Saturday.
