EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat sophomore Michelle Batts (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) of the softball team and junior Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) of the men's golf team have been named the Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Batts came alive during the Wildcats' spring break trip, leading Northwestern at the plate with a .667 average (6-for-9) over three games. Batts singled in NU's 7-2 win over Maryland Wednesday before going a combined 5-for-6 in NU's sweep of Big Ten foe Penn State. She was a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game with a home run and three RBIs.
Bowers posted a career-best second-place finish at the FAU Spring Break Championship, marking the highest individual finish of the year for a Wildcat. Bowers carded a 6-under 207 (67-68-72) for the weekend, firing a career-best 4-under 67 in the first round before following that up with a 3-under 68 on Saturday. Bowers led NU to a fourth-place team finish in the tournament.
This week's Community Service of Athlete of the Week is senior Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./First Academy) of the women's golf team. Wong and the entire women's golf team participated in the Golf Fore Africa event during their spring break trip to Arizona. The Wildcats assisted LPGA professionals in administering the event and conducting a golf clinic and silent auction that raised money to support children in Africa who have been orphaned or made vulnerable by AIDS.
