EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern junior outfielder Jake Goebbert (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) has been named the Big Ten Baseball Player of the Week the conference office announced Monday. It is the fourth such honor of his career after earning the distinction twice as a freshman and once as a sophomore.
Goebbert went 5-for-8 (.625) at the plate in the Wildcats' two-game series with Purdue, while drawing a pair of walks for a .700 on-base percentage. He also posted a 1.000 slugging percentage and a 1.700 OPS.
After notching a run-scoring double in NU's narrow 4-3 loss Friday, he went 4-for-4 with a walk and a pair of doubles in the Wildcats' convincing 13-4 victory over the Boilermakers on Saturday. Goebbert also scored three runs and drove in three more in the contest. Northwestern scored in all five innings in which he came to the plate. The performance raised his season batting average 40 points.
One season after setting a school record with 22 doubles, Goebbert paces the team with seven so far in 2009. He's also tops on the team with 18 RBI.
Northwestern (5-17, 1-1 Big Ten) returns to action Friday as it begins a three-game series at Michigan State.
