EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern head baseball coach Paul Stevens has announced the addition of four individuals who will join the Wildcats for the 2010 season. Colby Everett (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon), Luke Farrell (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and Jack Havey (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy) have all signed National Letters of Intent, while Arby Fields (Alta Loma, Calif./Los Osos) has also declared his intention to play for the baseball program in the spring.
"Our staff is very excited about signing these four young men into the NU baseball family," Stevens said. "We believe these four players will be great additions to our program on the field, in the classroom and in the community."
Everett, an infielder, has been a letterwinner each of the last three seasons and helped guide Horizon High to consecutive regional and state championships. An Arizona Scholar-Athlete Award winner, he was an honorable mention All-Pima region selection as a junior. Everett has competed for both the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Tampa Bay Rays scout teams.
"Colby is a strong, scrappy and smooth defensive infielder with great baseball instincts," Stevens said. "At the plate he has a very advanced approach, going gap-to-gap. Colby is as hard-nosed of a player as you will find on any baseball field in the country."
Havey, a left-handed pitcher and first baseman, batted .452 with 11 doubles, seven home runs and 40 RBI as a junior last season en route to earning all-conference honors while guiding Loyola Academy to it first sectional championship in school history. Named a Top 50 prospect by Prep Baseball Report, he is the brother of current NU pitcher Matt Havey.
"Jack will be a very good two-way player for us," said Stevens. "On the mound he is a very polished pitcher with great command of all his pitches. As a hitter he can drive the ball to all fields and is very special defensively at first base."
Farrell, a right-handed pitcher, comes from a family of baseball players. His brother, Jeremy, is an infielder in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, another brother, Shane, pitches at Marshall, and his father, John, pitched in the Majors and is the current pitching coach of the Boston Red Sox. Luke is a three-year letterwinner at St. Ignatius High and has played for the St. Louis Cardinals scout team the past two years.
"Luke has tremendous upside to his style of pitching. Being 6-foot-6, this young man creates great downward angle and movement. Luke is continuing to make huge strides in developing his skill over the last year and we believe the best is yet to come."
Fields, an outfielder, will come to Northwestern on scholarship with the football program where he will play running back. A switch-hitter and team captain, he also excels in the classroom where he was named to the Principal's Honor Roll and was a recipient of the Scholar-Athlete Award.
"Arby is a tremendous defensive outfielder with great speed," said Stevens. "He can cover the gaps in the outfield with the best outfielders in the country. His speed will also help him on the offensive side of the game. His hitting approach is based on contact but he has also shown pop at times."
