EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern sophomore Ellen Grigg (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) and senior Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) have been named the Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Grigg broke three school records while swimming career-best efforts to record top-20 finishes in all of her individual events at the NCAA Championships. Grigg broke her own school mark in the 500 free to take 17th before posting a lifetime-best swim in the 200 free to finish 19th. In her final outing, she broke two school records in one race by taking down both the 1,650 mark and the 1,000 standard in the swim.
Herbert became the second two-time NCAA champion in school history when he defeated last year's title-winner, Mike Pucillo of Ohio State, in the 184-pound final of the NCAA Championships on Saturday. Herbert (34-0) finishes his illustrious career on a 66-match winning streak and boasts the fifth-best varsity winning percentage (.971; 135-4) among all Division I wrestlers since the 1974-75 season.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is junior Sherrick McManis (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods). McManis and and teammate Jared Carpenter (Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green) visited Averroes Academy in Glenview to assist with physical education classes on Thursday, March 12. The student-athletes provided instruction on the rules of the game in football and conducted a series of simple instructional drills with the elementary school children.
