EVANSTON, Ill. -- Marcus Shrewsbury of Crown Point High School in Indiana and David Helmer of Langley High School in Virginia—both of whom are set to wrestle for Northwestern beginning next fall—captured state championships last weekend, putting an emphatic end to their prep careers.

“We're very happy to see that Marcus and David managed to end their high school careers on a very positive note,” NU head coach Tim Cysewski said. “They've both done an outstanding job of continuing to prepare themselves to wrestle in the Big Ten and we're excited to get them in our practice room and begin working with them.”

Shrewsbury took home the IHSAA state championship at 189 pounds to finish with a perfect 42-0 record his senior season at Crown Point. The victory was a breakthrough for Shrewsbury, who was the runner-up as a junior a year ago and placed seventh as a sophomore.

A stellar student at Crown Point, Shrewsbury wrestled his way to a 147-20 career high school record as well as a second-place finish at the Junior Nationals event last April in Virginia Beach, Va.

Helmer, ranked No. 9 nationally among seniors at 152 pounds by Wrestling USA Magazine, came out on top of his weight class in the Virginia AAA state wrestling tournament for the second consecutive year. He posted a 52-1 mark his senior season and a 161-16 overall record during his career at Langley High School while collecting four region championships.

No. 19 Northwestern is in the midst of preparations for the 2009 Big Ten Championships on March 7-8 at Penn State.
