EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat seniors Hannah Nielsen (Adelaide, Australia/Brighton Secondary) of the women's lacrosse team and Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./Independent Study H.S.) of the men's tennis team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Nielsen totaled an NCAA record 10 assists, including six in the first half, in NU's 20-6 win at Duquesne last Tuesday before scoring four goals and adding four assists against 11th-ranked Notre Dame on Friday. Her prolific week moved her into second place on the all-time NCAA career assists list with 157, leaving her just 21 shy of the collegiate record.
Dwyer improved to 9-1 in dual singles competition this year following his impressive upset against 18th-ranked Brett Helgeson of Notre Dame and his subsequent defeats of Kevin Hayward of Western Michigan and No. 71 Chris Clayton of Harvard. Dwyer has won five consecutive matches and has helped NU to a 10-1 dual match start.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is Brian Mulroe (Glenview, Ill./Loyola Academy) of the football team. Brian and members of the football team contributed to the OLPH-Zone father-son sports competition at Our Lady of Perpetual Help elementary school in Chicago. Mulroe and his teammates helped run various sports stations throughout the day-long event and were described by organizers afterward as having “an infectious enthusiasm that took the event to a whole new level.”
