EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat junior Lauren Lui (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) of the women's tennis team and freshman Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) of the men's golf team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Lui was named the recipient of the 2009 ITA Sportsmanship Award at the Indoor Team Championship in Wisconsin, becoming the first player from NU or the Big Ten conference to win the award, voted on by the 16 coaches in attendance. Lui won three of four singles matches--including an upset of No. 20 Bianca Eichkorn of Miami (Fla.) on Friday--in helping the 'Cats capture the prestigious title for the first time in school history.
Chun sparked NU to a 3-1 record at the Big Ten Match Play Championships in Coral Gables, Fla., going 4-0 in individual matches. Chun dominated throughout the tournament, crushing his opponents to the tune of a 20-under mark with 26 birdies and only three bogeys through 56 total holes. His 6 and 5 victory Saturday was key in helping NU win in a tiebreak vs. Purdue.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is junior Andrew Brewer (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) of the football team. Brewer was a featured speaker at a recent basketball tournament hosted by the Chicagoland Christian Sports Conference, which aims to connect high school students with local churches. Andrew spoke at halftime of the freshman/sophomore and varsity all-star games about the importance of values and good sportsmanship in athletics.
