EVANSTON, Ill. -- Mike Tamillow, who wrestled at Northwestern from 2004-08 and earned All-American status as a junior, won a silver medal (96 kg/211.5 lbs.) at the Dan Kolov International wrestling tournament in Bulgaria on Feb. 14. The native of Oak Park, Ill., was the only U.S. medalist in the freestyle competition.
Tamillow fell in the gold-medal finals to Yasin Kilich of Turkey, 1-4, 3-4. He won his first two bouts in the tournament against Remi Delcampe of France (2-1, 4-1) and Dragomir Stoychev of Bulgaria (3-0, 3-0).
It was Tamillow's first senior-level medal on the international tour.
After graduating from Northwestern, Tamillow also wrestled unattached in the 2008 Midlands Championships at NU where he won six bouts on his way to a seventh-place finish in the heavyweight division.
Tamillow was a three-time NCAA qualifier for Northwestern, finishing as high as seventh in the country (197) as a junior, the same year in which he won a Big Ten championship. In his last two years as a starter, Tamillow racked up a 30-3 dual record.
Northwestern wrestling returns to the mats this weekend when it hosts No. 6 Ohio State at 7 p.m. Friday before top-ranked Iowa comes to Welsh-Ryan Arena in the regular-season finale at 2 p.m. Sunday.
