EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat senior Eric Metzler (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) of the wrestling team and junior Amy Jaeschke (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) of the women's basketball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Metzler wrestled one of his best matches in recent memory at 133 pounds, knocking off preseason No. 15 and 2009 NCAA qualifier Tristen DeShazer of Northern Illinois on Thursday. Metzler succeeded in taking DeShazer out of his game plan, leading the match from start to finish and earning a 5-1 decision for a critical three team points early in the dual. Metzler is third on NU's active roster with 35 career victories.
Jaeschke posted two strong performances for NU last week, particularly in a 60-58 win over Purdue in the 'Cats' 2009-10 conference-opener. Jaeschke scored in double figures, grabbed seven rebounds and swatted four shots in each contest. She used a 7-of-13 effort from the field against the Boilermakers to record a team-high 16 points--12 of which came in the second half--and help Northwestern defeat Purdue for the first time since Feb. 21, 1997.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is senior Kristin Cartwright (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) of the women's basketball team. Cartwright and the entire women's basketball team hosted a group from the Autism Speaks organization on Autism Awareness Day during their game against Purdue. The event featured a ceremonial tip-off before the game and a special guest singer for the national anthem. Cartwright and her teammates also hosted an autograph session for the kids after they defeated the Boilermakers, 60-58.
