EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern 125-pounder Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) officially became a four-time place-winner at the Midlands Championships Wednesday night, finishing third following a forfeit by Central Michigan's fifth-seeded Matt Steintrager. All first, third and fifth-place bouts were contested Wednesday in front of a packed house at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Precin has placed eighth, second, first and third in his four appearances at his home tournament, which routinely draws much of the nation's top collegiate wrestling talent.
For the second consecutive season, the team title went to the University of Iowa, which amounted 168.5 points and came away with three individual champions. Rival Iowa State took second with 144.5 points while Central Michigan placed third with 118 points. Missouri (103.0) and Wisconsin (90.5) rounded out the top five team finishers.
Wednesday's final session saw five No. 1 seeds defend their top seeding by winning a Midlands title, while eighth-seeded heavyweight Jarod Trice of Central Michigan completed a surprising run to a Midlands crown by beating third-seeded David Zabriskie of Iowa State in the finals. Iowa's Brent Metcalf (149) was the only 2008 champion to successfully defend his title in 2009.
Northwestern (2-3-1) continues its dual season following the New Year when it travels to the prestigious NWCA National Duals Jan. 9-10 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
