EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat sophomore Luka Mirkovic (Belgrade, Serbia/La Lumiere (LaPorte, Ind.)) of the men's basketball team and junior Beth Marshall (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) of the women's basketball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Mirkovic showed off his all-around game in a pair of NU wins this week. Against North Florida, Mirkovic finished with 13 points, four rebounds, two blocks and a season-high eight assists in a 30-point NU victory. On Saturday vs. Stanford, Mirkovic posted nine points, six boards and five assists, the last one coming on Michael Thompson's crucial 3-pointer with 1:23 remaining and NU ahead by one. The NU center also hit a total of four 3-pointers in the two games.
Marshall scored a career-best 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting from 3-point land to lead NU to a 67-55 victory over SEC foe Arkansas. Her eight 3-point makes were the most by any Big Ten player this season and the total ranks sixth on the league's all-time single-game list. Marshall turned in another strong performance on Saturday, scoring eight points in addition to notching three steals and a season-best six assists in a Wildcat win over Chicago State.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is junior Stefan Demos (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) of the football team. Demos and the entire football team recently hosted a football clinic for members of the Youth Organizations Umbrella (YOU). The YOU is a nonprofit organization in Evanston whose mission is to provide all young people with the skills and opportunities to participate in the community and grow up to be active citizens.
