EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat senior Corey Wootton (Rutherford, N.J./Don Bosco) of the football team and junior Sabel Moffett (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) of the volleyball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Wootton sparked Northwestern's 17-10 victory over No. 4 Iowa at Kinnick Stadium Saturday with his sack of quarterback Ricky Stanzi in the end zone in the second quarter. Wootton forced a fumble that was recovered for an NU touchdown and also knocked Stanzi out of the game with an ankle injury. With the sack, Wootton moved into third on the Wildcats' career record list with 17.5. He was named NU's team defensive player of the game for his three-tackle effort.
Moffett was named the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Week after a pair of big performances against Michigan State and Michigan. Moffett recorded 10 blocks against both the Spartans and the Wolverines, tying her career best. It is the fourth time in her career she has reached double-digit block totals and the third time this season. Moffett, the Big Ten leader in blocks, also recorded her second career double-double against the Spartans by knocking down 17 kills.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is senior Mike Kafka (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) of the football team. Kafka spoke at the team banquet of the Wilmette Eagles, a traveling football team composed of players from the sixth through eighth grades. Mike shared his experiences with the young players and reminded them of the importance of keeping their academic work as the top priority. This is the 42nd season for the Wilmette Eagles, one of the oldest programs in the Wilmette Park District.
