NU Announces Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat sophomore John Shurna (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) of the men's basketball team and junior Amy Jaeschke (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) of the women's basketball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekened.
Shurna earned Most Outstanding Player honors at the Chicago Invitational Challenge this weekend, where NU knocked off No. 23 Notre Dame and previously unbeaten Iowa State on consecutive days. Shurna scored a career-high 25 points and collected eight rebounds against the Irish before leading all scorers with 23 points in the win over the Cyclones. He also notched 14 points in the 'Cats' defeat of Liberty on Tuesday.
Jaeschke stepped into whatever role best gave the Wildcats a chance to win last week. In a victory over No. 15 DePaul, it was rebounding, as Jaeschke pulled down 12 boards and added four blocks and three steals. Against College of Charleston, Jaeschke led the way on the offensive end, scoring a game-high 16 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. She turned in another all-around effort vs. Penn, finishing with eight points, four rebounds and two steals.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is junior Madeline Rozwat (Hillsborough, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands) of the cross country team. Rozwat, the vice president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, coordinated the food drive that took place at the men's and women's basketball games on Tuesday. Krakus Ham sponsors the food drive and donates a ham for every pound of food donated through the drive. All proceeds of the drive benefit Family Focus of Evanston.
