EVANSTON, Ill. -- College of Charleston used a 34-point second-half push to edge out a 54-50 victory over the Wildcats Friday evening at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Junior Amy Jaeschke (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) led the way with a game-high 16 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Senior Kristin Cartwright (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) joined Jaeschke in double figures with 12 points along with six boards. She also added four assists for the 4-1 Wildcats.
College of Charleston came out aggressively, taking the lead on scoring in the early going before Beth Marshall (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) rattled off five-consecutive points to give NU a 7-5 lead with 15:05 on the clock. Freshman Dannielle Diamant (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) followed Marshall's example and added two buckets of her own, putting Northwestern up six with just under 14 minutes left.
Play continued to seesaw until a jumper by Jaeschke with 6:52 remaining ignited an 8-3 Wildcat run to end the half and give NU a 31-20 advantage.
Jaeschke led all scorers with 10 points and five rebounds while Brittany Orban (North Canton, Ohio) and Kendall Hackney (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) also added five boards. Jaeschke shot 62 percent (5-of-8) from the field and chipped in a rejection.
Scoring alternated to open the second frame until College of Charleston held Northwestern scoreless for 10 minutes and took a seven-point advantage, 48-41. A Cartwright "and-1" pulled the Wildcats out of their drought and brought the score to 48-44 at the 4:39 mark. A defensive stop on the next possession took the momentum away from the visitors and Jaeschke capitalized on it at the other end with a lay-in to pull the 'Cats to within a bucket.
Four Cartwright free-throws over the next two minutes were the only scores of the game and gave NU a two-point advantage with just under a minute remaining. College of Charleston's Jade Hughes hit a triple to give her team a one-point advantage and Northwestern was forced to foul. The Cougars hit three free-throws in the final 16 seconds to secure their fourth victory of the season.
The Wildcats turn around and battle Penn tomorrow at approx. 4 p.m. in the final game of the DoubleTree White Invitational. The game is preceded by Iowa State's battle against College of Charleston, which tips at 2 p.m.
