Noting Northwestern...
Northwestern enters Friday's game against College of Charleston on the heels of its biggest win in the past decade--a 59-54 decision over No. 15 DePaul Tuesday evening at Welsh-Ryan Arena. With the victory--NU's first over a ranked opponent since January 23, 2005 when it defeated then-No. 22 Penn State--Northwestern improves to 4-0 on the season. It is the Wildcats' best beginning since the 1995-96 campaign when NU sprinted out to a 9-0 start and ended the season with an NIT appearance.
Last time out...
It was a hard-fought, fast-paced defensive battle for a full 40 minutes but when the dust settled, Northwestern had outlasted No. 15 DePaul, 59-55, Tuesday evening at Welsh-Ryan Arena in front of a loud and energetic crowd. Veterans Beth Marshall and Kristin Cartwright performed as upperclassmen are expected to in big games, contributing 12 and 10 points, respectively. Marshall went 4-of-7 from deep, while Cartwright dished out a team-high five assists and came up with timely defensive plays.

Like NU's last opponent, DePaul, College of Charleston is another high-powered offensive team, averaging 71 ppg. However, the Cougars have been known to turn the ball over a time or two, averaging 20 miscues per outing.
The Cougars enter the weekend with a mark of 4-1, having won their last three games after falling to North Carolina in Chapel Hill, 88-57. Since then, College of Charleston has posted convincing victories over Clemson (a team NU plays on Dec. 3 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge), Mercer and most recently, UT San Antonio.
Three players are averaging in double-figures for Charleston in Tonia Gerty (14.8 ppg), Jade Hughes (13.8 ppg) and Deidra Jones (11.8 ppg). Jones is averaging a double-double with 10.0 rpg to accompany her 11.8 ppg.
Marshall, Cartwright Spearhead NU's Upset vs. DePaul
Wildcat veterans Beth Marshall and Kristin Cartwright have been around long enough to know that Tuesday's game against No. 15 DePaul was more than just a contest against a ranked opponent; it was for bragging rights in Chicagoland. The two combined for nearly half of NU's points (27-of-59 points) and were a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe, including 4-of-4 in the final :38 seconds.
But Wait...There's More. Marshall and Cartwight Part II
Beth Marshall's 14 points tied a career-best and came in the form of 3-pointers. The junior was 4-of-7 from deep, but also grabbed four rebounds while dishing out one assist and frabbing one steal while only turning the ball over twice. Cartwright, meanwhile, handed out a team-high five assists and shot 44 percent from the field, including 33 percent from long-range. Her five helps also tied a career-high.
Role Play
Each Wildcat knew they had a role to play in Tuesday's game DePaul, and they executed it perfectly. Post players Amy Jaeschke and Dannielle Diamant picked up the slack on the boards, hauling down 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively, while Beth Marshall and Kristin Cartwright accepted the challenge to contribute from the perimeter. Marshall notched a game-and career-high 14 points while Cartwright pitched in 13. Junior Meshia Reed was NU's much-needed spark off the bench, running off seven timely points--including a three-point conversion and a huge tip-in with 1:19 on the clock--in just 12 minutes of action.
Yes, They Do Windows Too
One of Joe McKeown's goals for last year's recruiting class was to add height. With the additions of freshmen 6-2 Kendall Hackney and 6-4 Dannielle Diamant, not only did he add height, but he also got outstanding shooters and even better rebounders. The Wildcats out-rebounded DePaul 51-38 Tuesday evening; an occurrance that has become a trend this season. Northwestern is grabbing 47.2 boards per outing and is averaging 11.0 more rebounds than its opponents. Amy Jaeschke leads the team with 11.0 rpg while Diamant is second with 7.3 and Hackney contributes 4.8 per outing, which is fourth on the squad.
Diamant Coming Up Big For 'Cats
Dannielle Diamant tied a career-high with 10 caroms against DePaul while also chipping in five points in a solid 32 minutes of action. The freshman also recorded the first double-double of her career against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Nov. 20. She tallied a game-high 17 points 4-of-6 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line while also pulling down 10 rebounds. Diamant has started every game for NU.
