EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat junior Maria Mosolova (Moscow, Russia/No. 204) of the women's tennis team and sophomore Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) of the men's golf team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Mosolova won her first career ITA Midwest Regional singles championship Tuesday by defeating Notre Dame's 20th-ranked Kristy Frilling in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Mosolova, the top-ranked singles player in the Campbell's/ITA College Tennis poll, improved to 8-2 this fall and 84-16 in her career at Northwestern. She earned a berth to play in this weekend's National Indoor Singles Championship, where last year she reached the semifinal round.
Chun finished second among a field of 116 competitors at the inaugural Asian Amateur Championship, earning a spot in International Final Qualifying for the 2010 Open Championship at St. Andrews. Chun entered the final round of the tournament two shots off the lead and fought his way to a 1-over 73 and a 7-under 281 (74-68-66-73) for the Championship, maintaining his second-place status and his spot in the IFQ.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is senior Tania Lyerly (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) of the women's diving team. Lyerly and over 100 other student-athletes participated in a special Halloween version of Wildcat Alley--Wildcat AlleyWeen--before NU's football game vs. Penn State on Saturday. Ten stations--including trick-or-treating and face-painting--were added to the usual activities included in Wildcat Alley. More than 150 costumed children partook in the events before the football game.
