Coming into Northwestern as a freshman is a very exciting, yet sometimes nerve-wracking experience. It was made easier knowing that I was coming into a group of welcoming, caring and fun people. I had very high expectations of both the school, swim team, and my performance in the pool. Six weeks after my arrival on campus and days after my first meet I can easily say that each and every one of my expectations has been greatly exceeded. The team did everything they could to welcome us with open arms from day one. This immediately transferred into the pool. During practice and meets, there is a certain feeling of pride, tradition and excellence that when combined cannot be described in words!
The first meet was definitely a memorable one. Given that it was against IU, we all knew that we had to come out with our best performances -- no questions asked. Although we ended up losing the meet in points, we won eight out of the sixteen events -- a fantastic accomplishment. The meet started rolling from the first event and the spirit and excitement never ceased. I have no doubt whatsoever that the excitement and drive that was created by this meet will transfer over through to the meet against Purdue and into the TYR Invitational - our first "major" meet. I expect everyone to improve greatly from an already good baseline set at the IU meet. I would not be surprised if we came out of the Invite with a handful of best times and perhaps some qualifying times for meets later in the year.
