EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat junior Matt Eliason (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) of the men's soccer team and senior Kate Nobilio (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) of the volleyball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Eliason scored two game-winning goals for NU this week, beginning with his late tally in the 'Cats' 1-0 victory over local rival Loyola (Chicago). On Sunday, Eliason broke a scoreless tie in the 63rd minute with his conference-leading 12th goal of the year, helping the Wildcats to a 2-0 defeat of traditional Big Ten power Indiana. Eliason--the College Soccer News National Player of the Week--has 29 career goals, just one shy of Northwestern's career record.
Nobilio became just the fifth player in Big Ten Conference history to record 2,000 career digs Friday in Northwestern's match at Iowa. She followed that performance with a 17-dig effort at Wisconsin on Saturday to move into fourth place all-time among the conference leaders with 2,025. Nobilio leads the Big Ten in digs this season at 360 and ranks first in the conference averaging 4.56 digs per set.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is senior Chad Noble (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall) of the baseball team. Noble and members of eight varsity NU teams walked in Friday's homecoming parade with local Evanston children from Oakton and Willard Elementary Schools in an effort to increase Northwestern Athletics' relationships with the local schools. NU alum and current Chicago Bear Nick Roach served as the grand marshal for the parade.
