Wildcats Play Host to ITA Midwest Regional Championships

Singles Qualifying Draws

EVANSTON, Ill. -- One of the fall season's premier tennis tournaments gets underway Thursday as the region's top players descend on Northwestern for the 2009 ITA Midwest Regional Championships. Singles qualifying play begins at 9 a.m. Thursday inside the Combe Tennis Center.

Qualifying brackets are posted at the top of this page and on NU's ITA Midwest Regional Championships Tournament Central Web page. Qualifying singles play continues Friday morning until doubles competition begins at 2 p.m.

There are 19 teams competing in this year's Midwest Regional, including seven Big Ten squads. In this year's field is: Akron, Cleveland State, DePaul, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, Illinois-Chicago, Illinois State, Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne, Iowa, Marquette, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Toledo, Western Michigan, Wisconsin and Youngstown State.

Competition will likely last until approximately 9:30 p.m. each day. Updated brackets will be available each afternoon and final results will be posted at the conclusion of play on the women's tennis page at NUsports.com.

Singles and doubles championship matches will be played on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Northwestern does not have any representatives in Thursday's 48-player qualifying bracket. The Wildcats, who have won the Midwest Regional singles title every year since 2001, hit the courts for the first time in doubles play on Friday. In last year's final, Samantha Murray defeated Notre Dame's Kelcy Tefft in a three-set title match, her second consecutive trip to championship round.

FAN PARKING ADVISORY
Fans attending matches on Thursday and Friday at the Combe Tennis Center are advised that they will need to acquire a temporary parking permit from the lobby inside the Henry Crown Sports and Aquatic Center and place the permit in their car before proceeding to the match. Cars without permits will be ticketed. Parking restrictions are lifted on Saturday and Sunday.
