EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat seniors Alicia Herczeg (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) of the women's soccer team and Zeke Markshausen (Capron, Ill./North Boone) of the football team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Herczeg scored the game's only goal in Northwestern's 1-0 upset at home over Michigan State, which entered Sunday's game with an 8-1-4 record. Herczeg converted a penalty kick attempt in the 21st minute--the first PK goal of her career--to give her a team-best five goals this season and 16 for her career. She led Northwestern on Sunday with four shots against the Spartans.
Markshausen enjoyed one of the most prolific outings ever by an NU wide receiver Saturday at Michigan State. Markshausen caught 16 passes--the most by a Wildcat receiver in 27 years and one off the record of 17 set in 1982--and racked up a career-best 111 receiving yards. He also scored his first career touchdown on a 1-yard grab in the fourth quarter. Markshausen leads NU in receiving yards this year and is second in the Big Ten with 7.1 catches per game.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is freshman Kristin Scharkey (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza) of the softball team. Scharkey and other student-athletes from the softball, swimming and cross country teams volunteered at Willard Elementary's Fall Street Fest on Oct. 17. Scharkey and the student-athletes painted faces and ran games at the annual fall-themed carnival, which focuses on fostering a welcoming and engaging school community.
