EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcats junior Hannah Nielsen (Adelaide, Australia/Brighton Secondary) of the women's lacrosse team and redshirt freshman Robert Kellogg (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City North) of the wrestling team have been named the Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Nielsen was a catalyst to NU's 24-6 season-opening win against Denver in the Women'sLax.com Surfside Classic in San Diego, Calif., scoring three goals and chipping in two assists. On Saturday, the 2008 Tewaaraton Trophy winner helped Northwestern claim a 21-5 victory in an exhibition game against Team Canada, netting three goals and racking up six assists.
Kellogg provided the extra boost necessary for NU to upset No. 15 Wisconsin, 21-19, and move to 2-0 in Big Ten action. Trailing 4-1 in the third period to UW's Travis Rutt, Kellogg suddenly seized momentum by getting Rutt on his back and keeping him there, notching a crucial six-point pin at the 6:19 mark. Kellogg also battled to a 3-2 win over Michigan State's Ian Hinton on Friday.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is sophomore Kyle Bertin (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edward) of the wrestling team. Kyle and other student-athletes began a learning collaboration with St. Joan of Arc School in Evanston through which they will assist with a health and wellness initiative titled “Game On.” Each student-athlete has been assigned a classroom or grade level which they will visit periodically to get the children excited about healthy eating, physical activity and general wellness.
