EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcats sophomore Maria Mosolova (Moscow, Russia/No. 204) of the women's tennis team and senior Craig Moore (Doylestown, Pa./Lawrenceville (N.J.) Prep) of the men's basketball team have been named Northwestern's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Mosolova, the nation's No. 1-ranked singles player, traveled to Palm Springs, Calif., this weekend and took home the singles championship at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic. Three of Mosolova's four wins came against ranked opponents, including in the final against No. 26 Hilary Barte of Stanford, who last year was the ITA National Rookie of the Year. Mosolova is 16-2 in singles action this year.
Moore scored 16 and 22 points, respectively, in Northwestern's games against No. 19 Purdue and No. 18 Minnesota this week. Moore fueled NU's 16-0 run to start the second half against the Gophers Sunday and cashed in on six 3-pointers on the afternoon. He is second on the team with 14.1 points per game and is shooting 45 percent from beyond the 3-point arc this season.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is senior Jeff Yarbrough (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) of the football team. Yarbrough visited St. Eugene Elementary School's assembly for the D.A.R.E. program. Jeff was on hand to congratulate the children on the completion of the program and reiterate how drugs can negatively affect your life and athletics. He stressed that the keys to a healthy and successful life are to stay in school and complete your education.
