EVANSTON, Ill. -- In her first tournament as the nation's No. 1-ranked singles player, Wildcats sophomore Maria Mosolova lived up to her top billing in winning the singles championship at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. Mosolova defeated Stanford's 26th-ranked Hilary Barte -- the 2008 ITA National Rookie of the Year -- in Sunday's final, 6-2, 6-7 (8), 7-5.

Mosolova, now 16-2 on the year in singles play, took down three nationally ranked opponents on her way to the tournament championship.

Back in Evanston, No. 1 Northwestern concluded its season-opening weekend of competition at the Wildcat Invitational Sunday. The 'Cats won five of their six doubles matches and recorded a 12-3 combined doubles record in the four-team event.

In the first session, it was a pair of senior-freshman tandems that were victorious for Northwestern. Georgia Rose teamed with newcomer Stacey Lee for an 8-3 win against Katie Rybakova and Bonny Davidson of Florida state, while Nazlie Ghazal and freshman Elena Chernyakova defeated Cali Gustafson and Kirsten Gambrell of DePaul, 8-2.

During the final three matches of the tournament for Northwestern, Rose and Ghazal got together for an 8-4 win vs. Alabama's Tiffany Welcher and Taylor Lindsey while senior Keri Robison and Chernyakova overcame Florida State's Jessica Wente and Lauren Macfarlane, 8-4.

Lee and junior Samantha Murray rounded out the event for NU with an 8-2 win against the Crimson Tide's Alice Tunaru and Meritt Emery.

Northwestern returns to action on Jan. 31 for the Indoor Team Qualifying round, which will be hosted at the Combe Tennis Center in Evanston. Teams and times of competition are still to be announced.
