EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore Maria Mosolova, the nation's No. 1-ranked singles player, defeated two ranked opponents on her way to the finals of the National Collegiate Tennis Classic where she is set to meet Stanford's Hilary Barte Sunday in Palm Springs, Calif. Junior Lauren Lui also won two matches Saturday and is in the consolation quarterfinals.
Mosolova began the day against UCLA's Yasmin Schnack (No. 106) and rallied after dropping the first set 0-6 to win the next two, 7-5, 6-2. In the semifinals, Mosolova came up against No. 26 Maria Sanchez of USC and picked up another three-set win, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to earn a trip to the finals.
The two duo of Mosolova and Lui fell in the quarterfinals of the doubles bracket to Stanford's Barte and Lindsay Burdette, 8-6.
Saturday was also Day Two of the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston, where Northwestern started the day off on a strong note, winning all but one match through two rounds of action. In doubles play against regional foe DePaul, Northwestern received victories from the duos of Elena Chernyakova and Georgia Rose, Samantha Murray and Keri Robison and Nazlie Ghazal and Stacey Lee. All three pairs can now boast two doubles wins in as many days for Northwestern.
On the singles side, No. 24 Murray improved her season record to 15-5 with a three-set win against Alabama's Paulina Bigos. Murray dropped the first set, 3-6, before responding with 6-4, 6-2 set victories. Against Florida State's Katie Rybakova (No. 35), Murray fell behind 1-6 but won the second set 7-5 before Rybakova eventually rallied in a dramatic third-set win, 6-4.
No. 28 Rose picked up her second singles win of the tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over the Crimson Tide's Tiffany Welcher. In her second match of the day, Rose met Florida State's Noemie Scharle. After dropping the first set 1-6, Rose led the second set 3-2 but could not maintain the advantage, eventually falling to Scharle 6-3.
Meanwhile, after a hard-fought three-set win to close Day One of the Wildcat Invite Friday, Robison came back strong Saturday with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of 'Bama's Alice Tunaru.
Lee wrapped up her singles competition at the Wildcat Invite with a 3-0 record, concluding the day with a 6-1, 6-2 decision vs. Ania Rynarzewska of Florida State. Also collecting an impressive win was NU's Ghazal, who defeated No. 53 Federica Suess in two sets.
