EVANSTON, Ill. -- On another day of subzero temperatures in Evanston, the place to be was inside the Combe Tennis Center at Northwestern where No. 1 NU hosted Alabama, DePaul and Florida State in the Wildcat Invitational. Meanwhile, two Wildcats -- Maria Mosolova and Lauren Lui -- escaped the cold in Palm Springs, Calif. competing at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic.

In doubles action, the tandem of Lui and Mosolova handled Ana Cecilia Olivos and Stephanie MacFarlane, 8-3, in their opening match. On the singles side, both Wildcats came away with two-set victories as Lui defeated UCLA's Stephanie Wetmore and Mosolova, the nation's No. 1-ranked singles player, overcame Lynn Blau of Georgia Tech, 6-3, 6-0.

Lui then came up against Stanford's Hilary Barte, who is ranked 26th nationally, and dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision.

Back in Evanston, the 'Cats looked sharp in their season debut, compiling a 4-2 doubles record and winning their first of six singles matches. Senior and 28th-ranked Georgia Rose picked up a 6-2, 6-0 victory against No. 109 Dunja Antunovic of DePaul in singles, while in doubles Rose teamed with Samantha Murray to defeat Alabama's Tiffany Welcher and Paulina Bigos and partnered with Elena Chernyakova to knock off Jessica Wente and Lauren MacFarlane of Florida State.

Freshman Stacey Lee also performed well, teaming with senior Nazlie Ghazal to beat Ania Rybakova and Bonny Davidson of Florida State, 8-1, rebounding after an 8-6 loss earlier in the day to Alabama's Alice Tunaru and Meritt Emery. Lee also won her singles match against DePaul's Kirsten Gambrell, 6-2, 4-1 (ret.).

Play resumes at 9 a.m. with Northwestern opening the day with doubles competition at 10 a.m. followed by singles play at 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
