NU Announces Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat seniors Sam Nemecek (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) of the women's fencing team and Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) of the men's swimming team have been named Northwestern's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Nemecek won the final bout in NU's dramatic 14-13 win against Temple Saturday at the Penn Invitational, where the 'Cats won all five of their matches. Nemecek compiled an 11-1 mark during the tournament, lifting her career record to 347-57. Her .859 career winning percentage is tops all-time in Northwestern history.
Nilsson broke the NU school record in the 1,000 free and shattered two Koenitzer Aquatic Center pool records to lead NU to a 174.5-85.5 victory over Division III Carthage College Saturday. He swam a 9:04.11 to shatter the four-year-old school record by nine seconds. Nilsson's swim beat the field by 52.2 seconds and also broke the Koenitzer pool mark by 27.16 seconds.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is sophomore Amy Jaeschke (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) of the women's basketball team. Jaeschke and other student-athletes from the women's basketball team recently met with participants of the Evanston Special Recreation program, many of whom participate on the Evanston Special Olympics team. Amy and her teammates participated in a meet-and-greet session and were available to sign autographs.
