NU Announces Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat freshman Sophie Ewald (Berlin, Germany/Droste Huelshoff Oberschule/Barron (Wis.)) of the cross country team and junior Brad Phillips (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) of the football team have been named the Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Ewald placed second among NU runners and eighth overall out of more than 300 competitors in the Sean Earl Loyola Invitational. Northwestern placed first among 32 teams, its first team victory since 2006. Ewald has now come in either first or second for the 'Cats in each of her first three collegiate races.
Phillips racked up a career-best 11 tackles in NU's 22-17 win at Iowa Saturday, including a bone-jarring tackle in the fourth quarter on Iowa running back Shonn Greene that forced a fumble and set up Northwestern's game-winning touchdown drive. Phillips also had a key third-down sack in the fourth quarter to force a Hawkeye punt and totaled two tackles-for-loss in the game.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is Jeanette Lorme (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) of the women's soccer team. Lorme and other member's of the women's soccer squad have been volunteering at the Rice Child and Family Center in Evanston every Monday afternoon throughout the fall quarter where she tutors children and leads them through games and activities in their after-school program. Lorme also scored the game-winning goal in NU's 1-0 upset victory against No. 17 Illinois on Sunday, Sept. 28.
