EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat senior Carly Brown (Kalispell, Mont./Flathead) of the cross country team and junior Brendan Smith (Andover, Mass./New Hampton Prep (N.H.)) of the football team have been named the Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.

Northwestern's cross country team placed second in the DePaul Opener Friday thanks in large part to Brown, who nabbed third place out of 69 runners. Brown finished the 4K event in 15:02.94. It was the second-best individual finish of her career.

After missing most of the 2007 season with an injury, Smith made a big return to the gridiron against Syracuse. He returned an interception for a touchdown in addition to recording a tackle-for-loss and a pass breakup. Smith, who last week was voted a 2008 team captain by his teammates, finished with five total tackles.

In a new feature for 2008-09, Hilton Garden Inn also is sponsoring a weekly Community Service Athlete of the Week. This week's selection is a collective honor for the entire men's basketball team. NU has been heavily involved in community service projects since May, when it was the top fundraising team at Relay For Life. Inspired by their summer internships with Ovation Pharmaceuticals, Patrick Houlihan (Rockville Center, N.Y./Phillips Academy (Mass.)) and Jeff Ryan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) recently held a car wash and raised about $350 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Patrick and Jeff generated such a turnout they were forced to turn cars away.

Saturday at Ryan Field, Craig Moore (Doylestown, Pa./Lawrenceville (N.J.) Prep), Luka Mirkovic (Belgrade, Serbia/La Lumiere (LaPorte, Ind.) and Michael Thompson (Chicago, Ill./Lincoln Park) performed Random Acts of Kindness for 'Cats football fans, checking in on fans and giving them free food and drinks at the game
