Goebbert, Kalina Named to Academic All-District First Team

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern sophomore infielder Jake Goebbert (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) and senior outfielder Mike Kalina (Munster, Ind./Munster) have each been named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District V First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

By virtue of their first-team selections, both individuals are now eligible for Academic All-America consideration.

Goebbert has a 3.28 grade point average while majoring in psychology. He entered this week as the nation's leader with an average of 0.55 doubles per game. His 22 doubles lead the Big Ten and are a Northwestern season record, surpassing the 31-year-old mark previously set by Kent McGuire in 1977. Goebbert ranks third in the Big Ten with a .703 slugging percentage and 96 total bases, seventh with a .488 on-base percentage and eight home runs and eighth with 43 RBI.

Kalina sports a 3.44 grade point average while having a double major in psychology as well as environmental sciences. He hit a whopping .564 (22-39) through the team's first nine games, collecting multiple hits in each of the first eight contests. He currently ranks sixth in the Big Ten with an average of .408. Kalina also ranks ninth with a .575 slugging percentage. His 17 multi-hit games this season lead the team. He is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Northwestern (18-23, 11-13 Big Ten) closes out its home season this weekend when it faces Indiana in a four-game series at Rocky Miller Park.
