EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's Jake Herbert is ranked 10th in the world at 84kg/185 lbs. according to the latest international freestyle rankings. Herbert, the 2007 NCAA champion at 184 lbs., took an Olympic redshirt year last season to pursue a spot on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team.

In rankings released on March 31, Herbert sits behind only second-ranked Joe Williams among United States wrestlers at 185 lbs. and the next U.S. wrestler sits at No. 22.

The ranking system, developed by the Iranian Students News Agency and the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation, uses a point system for determining the top athletes in the world in all three styles of Olympic wrestling.

Points are awarded to athletes who place first through fifth in a variety of international tournaments. The point system is weighted, giving more points to the major events on the schedule.

Herbert is one of eight Wildcats competing at this weekend's University Nationals. He will be the favorite at 185 lbs. and defending champion Mike Tamillow will be a favorite at 211 lbs.

They will be joined by Ryan Lang, James Kohlberg, Andrew Nadhir, Robert Joyce, Mike Benefiel and Robert Kellogg.

The winner of each Olympic weight class automatically earns a berth in the 2008 Olympic Trials.

Herbert will return to the Wildcats for 2008-09 as the favorite at 184 lbs. to win his second national title.
