EVANSTON, Ill. -- Top-ranked Northwestern will put its winning streak on the line when it travels to South Bend, Ind., to face No. 16 Notre Dame. The Wildcats have won 13 straight dual matches and look to keep their streak alive with just four matches remaining before the Big Ten Championships commence.
Northwestern (19-1, 7-0), who has held the top-rank for seven-consecutive weeks, won a pair of Big Ten dual matches last weekend in Evanston. The Wildcats knocked-off No. 29 Ohio State, 7-0, before taking care of No. 28 Indiana, 6-1.
The 'Cats have made a strong case for hanging on to the top-spot this season, with 14 of their wins coming against current nationally ranked opponents. NU's sole loss this season came against then No. 1 Georgia Tech in a 4-2 decision at the National Indoor Championships in early February. The Wildcats had previously defeated the defending national champion Yellow Jackets, 6-1, this season.
Notre Dame (16-7, 3-0) won in its last match against Syracuse, 6-1. The Fighting Irish are currently enjoying a nine-match winning streak of their own, with eleven of their wins coming against nationally ranked opponents.
In a rivalry that has become fierce in recent past, the 'Cats look to build upon their success over Notre Dame. Northwestern owns the all-time series, 21-10, and defeated the Irish in its last match, 5-2.
The Wildcats remain on the road as they get back to Big Ten play with a pair of matches this weekend. First up, the 'Cats travel to Iowa City to take on No. 47 Iowa at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12. Northwestern then heads north to duel with No. 73 Minnesota at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 13.
