EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) of men's golf and Morgan Lathrop (Briarcliff, N.Y./The Hackley School) of women's lacrosse as its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Lipsky won the first tournament of his collegiate career Saturday with a 1-under 139 in the 36-hole, one-day Notre Dame Spring Invitational. Lipsky matched the tournament's best individual round with a 2-under 68 in the first round of the event before holding on to win with a final round 1-over 71.
With darkness looming, Lipksy was forced into a tie with Notre Dame's Eddie Peckels. Lipsky's score led Northwestern to the tournament team title, the second of the 2007-08 season for the Wildcats.
Lathrop recorded a season-high 10 saves in helping Northwestern defeat No. 7 Duke, 15-11, en route to its school-record 32nd consecutive win. With the Wildcats being out-shot in the opening half, 18-12, Lathrop recorded six first-half saves in keeping the Blue Devils at bay and the Wildcats within two goals at the half.
Her four saves in the second half proved to be the difference, as Northwestern rallied to pick up the 15-11 victory. Lathrop's performance was vital in helping the No. 1 Wildcats improve to 11-0 this season and pick up their first victory at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.
