EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern competed at the Marquette Twilight track and field event last weekend, posting some impressive individual performances as the Wildcats gear up for the fall.
With winds blowing at a steady 15-20 mph, and gusts upward of 40 mph, the treacherous conditions were not enough to keep the 'Cats from placing well at the meet. Sophomore Paulina Garcia (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) impressed with her first place finish in the 5000m, completing the race in 18:33.76.
Just behind her Madeline Rozwat (Hillsborough, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands) ran for a new personal best, finishing the event in sixth place with a time of19:25.89. Carla Wirtschafter (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills) ran in 20:22.43 and Annie Reihman (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) finished the race in 20:38.41 to round out the Wildcat group.
Earlier in the day, despite weather conditions at their worst during the 1500m, sophomore Britta Helwig (Chicago, Ill./Luther North) still was able to finish fourth in the event with a time of 5:13.37. Lauren Maddox (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) finished just behind her in ninth.
Next up, Northwestern travels to the Dr. Keeler Invitational, hosted by North Central College. On Thursday evening, May 8, the Wildcats' 5k and 10k runners will compete under the lights in their respective events. Then on Friday, May 9, the 1500m racers will run. That event will conclude the Wildcats' spring track schedule as they prepare for the upcoming cross-country season this fall.
