EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham, Grammar) of women's tennis and Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wisc./Patelli) of baseball as its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Murray won two singles and two doubles matches last weekend in helping the Wildcats earn their 10th-consecutive Big Ten title. At No. 3 singles, Murray had the clinching match against Minnesota on Friday with a 6- 1, 6-1 victory and then clinched the title match against Michigan with a 6-1, 6-4 win.
Murray, who is nationally ranked No. 30, now has won a team-high 37 overall singles matches. With her two doubles wins, Murray also improved to 12-1 in dual play with partner Suzie Matzenauer.
Owens collected a team-high eight hits last week to surge past Mark Loretta (2000-03) into sole possession of second place on the school's career hits list. Owens now has 240 career hits, 20 shy of Tom Hildebrand's NU record.
The senior second baseman hit .421 for the week with two home runs, seven RBI and a .789 slugging percentage. In Saturday's opening game, Owens hit a game-tying two-run home run in the fifth and then singled home the winning run in the sixth. He also made a number of highlight-reel defensive plays throughout the week.
