EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 1 Northwestern will face second-ranked Baylor in Waco, Texas at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, in what could be its biggest dual match of the season. The Wildcats (14-1, 3-0) extended their duel winning streak to eight matches with a 5-2 victory over the 17th-ranked Texas Longhorns Tuesday afternoon.
Northwestern has held the top spot for five consecutive weeks and knows the importance of its match against Baylor. Despite the rare singles losses by Maria Mosolova (Moscow, Russia/No. 204) at No. 1 and Suzie Matzenauer (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine) at No. 6 on Tuesday, the 'Cats pulled out a 5-2 victory over one of the nation's top squads. This will likely boast Northwestern's confidence leading up to Wednesday's match.
Baylor (17-1, 3-0) has won 15 consecutive matches, and currently holds a 37-match home winning streak dating to 2005. In its last dual, Baylor defeated division rival Texas Tech, 7-0.
In all likelihood third-ranked Mosolova will challenge Baylor's Lenka Broosova, who is the 11th-ranked singles player, at No. 1. The Wildcats and Bears each have four singles players and two doubles pairings ranked nationally.
The Wildcats next four matches come against Big Ten opponents. The first two will take place this weekend at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29, at Purdue and 11 a.m. Sunday, March 30, at Illinois.
